Couple on whom my characters, “Jim and Kate,” are based in THE CANYON CRAWL novel. In real life, as in the novel, they were heading to the primitive campground at Phantom Ranch in celebration of “Kate’s” 35th birthday. They came from San Diego. Delightful couple. You’ll like them.

Endless, treacherous, dispiriting, switchbacks, six-point-nine miles to perdition on the South Kaibab. Here, we’re transitioning from limestone to sandstone indicating the proximity to The Plateau.
The Tipoff
First crack at The Colorado. Our spirits began to revive.
Two Hikers
Jim and Kate had passed us up long ago and were hoofing it down the switchbacks on South Kaibab to The Plateau and on down to The Colorado. We wouldn’t see them again until dinner at the Ranch… which we missed. Sort of.

Mule Team snaking it’s way up the South Kaibab above The Plateau. The mules bring everything to Phantom Ranch and take everything away that makes it a going concern. “If aliens abduct the mules, everyone would head for the South Rim and it would be every biped for itself… people are not the most valuable animals at Phantom Ranch.”
Trailrunner Redux
One false step, and it’s a long roll to The Plateau. The Mules are the most sure-footed animal in Grand Canyon.
